Cross country skiing in Ukraine

Cross country skiing is popular all across Ukraine. Much of the country has snow on the ground for two to four months each winter, and many Ukrainians pull out their Soviet-era skis to go skiing through the forest. Among the younger generation downhill skiing is more popular.

Since cross country skiing is so readily available all over "flat" Ukraine, few ski resorts have paid much attention to the wishes of cross country skiers. Most notably, Tysovets and Bukovel have well-developed cross country trails. Tysovets was a training ground of Soviet ski teams and apparently has a nice network of paths, and Bukovel is building world-class ski infrastructure to match European resorts.

Other resorts may have cross country ski trails as well, but we do not know for sure. If you happen to know, please write to use.

In general, the Ukrainian Carpathians are ideal for cross country skiing, with innumerous forest roads and gentle valleys. Skiable roads and paths are so plentiful that ski areas — which generally consist of just the side of a mountain — may see no need or possibility to develop cross country trails.
