Accommodations in Tysovets

Tysovets ski resort

Tysovets is located 32 km from Skole (Lviv oblast), which is on the Kiev-Uzhhorod train route. The ski resort can be reached by car or taxi from the Skole train station (expect to pay 80-100 UAH per car) and has a base elevation of 900 m above sea level and a maximum elevation of about 1100 m. Aside from the Tysovets ski area, there is a "beginners' slope" next to the parking lot (see pictures below) that is suitable for beginners and lower intermediates. Here a day pass costs 60 UAH — the same as for the Tysovets ski area 2 km away. Unfortunately, they use different passes, so you must choose one or the other.

To get to the Tysovets slopes, you take an old single-chair lift or drive your car to the top of the mountain 2 km from the place where all the hotels are located. From here you can ski on one of three nice wide runs. One is good for lower intermediates and ends at the half-way point of the chair lift. The other two are for intermediates and upper intermediates, respectfully, and have their own tow lifts.

Runs are groomed ever day or two, which is very nice, but the tow lifts themselves are quite slow. Lines of up to 20-30 minutes can accumulate on weekends (still better than Slavsko). The outhouses at the top of the chair lift are in deplorable condition (I took a picture, but decided not to post it here). However, nice skis are available for rent at the base of the mountain for 40-90 UAH per set.

Tysovets is an old Soviet ski training base. The ski jumps that Olympic athletes used to train on (see pictures below) still stand, but aren't used anymore. Today much of Tysovets is still run by the Ministry of Defense, and you will see soldiers in uniform clearing snow. In the Tysovets hotel cafeteria (see below) you will find Soviet prices as well — 50 kopecks for a cup of compote, 1.30 UAH for borsch, etc. Snacks and hot, cold, and alcoholic beverages, as well as more substantial meals are available in several places for very reasonable prices.

With few empty chairs, these people will be waiting a long time (up to 30 min.)
